How to Remove Sticker and Adhesive Residue From Clothes

The short answer

Sticker residue, tape adhesive, water-based glue, and super glue need different treatment. Identify the adhesive before choosing a method. Start tape and label residue with a cold method: harden it, then scrape gently. Water-based glue is a laundry job, once the label confirms that is what it is. Cured super glue may be permanent on washable fabric. Whatever you have, read the care label and test your product out of sight first. Keep the garment out of the dryer until you are finished.

Work out what left the residue

Appearance can narrow the possibilities. Use the product label or what you know about the spill where possible.

Tacky or hardened? Tacky residue picks up lint and spreads under pressure. Hardened residue is brittle, which suits the cold-and-scrape route.

Already washed or dried? Start with the same adhesive-specific method and avoid more heat until the residue is gone.

Before any solvent touches the garment

Read the care label

Do not use a product or procedure the label prohibits. If it says dry clean only, do not wet-treat it. Take it in and tell the cleaner what the adhesive was.

Test for color before the solvent goes near the mark

Pick an inside seam, a hem allowance or the inside of a cuff, apply your product exactly as its label directs, let it dry, and look for any color or texture change. The order matters: test first, treat second.

A clean test lowers the risk but does not prove the visible area will react the same way.

Ventilation and flames

Where a solvent is involved, ventilate the room, keep it away from any open flame, and follow the product label on protective equipment, storage and disposal. Never combine two products.

Type 1: sticker, label and tape residue

The common case, and it is cold rather than hot.

  1. 1Harden it. An ice cube in a bag. For a small item you can chill it briefly in the freezer instead, if its care label permits it.
  1. 2Scrape the excess off. A dull edge, worked gently. Lift the brittle material away rather than digging at the weave.
  1. 3Turn the stain face down onto clean absorbent paper or cloth. This gives the residue somewhere to go that is not further into your shirt.
  1. 4Sponge from the back with a spot-cleaning product labeled for the fabric, working the residue out through the face and into the absorbent layer.
  1. 5Change the absorbent layer as it picks up residue. Replace the absorbent layer before residue can transfer back to the garment.
  1. 6Let it dry, then launder according to the care label.

Use this method for tape and label residue. Modern pressure-sensitive labels may respond differently, so treat it as a starting point rather than a certainty.

Type 2: water-based craft and school glue

Use this method only when the adhesive label or product information identifies the glue as water-based and the garment care label permits soaking. Do not assume a glue is water-based because it looks like school glue. Check the container.

If the glue is confirmed as water-based, cool water may soften it. Do not add a stronger product unless both the adhesive instructions and garment care label permit it.

If the residue does not soften in water, it may not be water-based. Check the label rather than escalating the chemistry.

Type 3: super glue

Cured super glue may be permanent on washable fabric. Aggressive solvent treatment can damage the fiber or the dye.

Valuable, delicate, dry-clean-only, acetate or triacetate garments

Do not treat these at home. Take the item to a professional cleaner and tell them it is super glue.

An ordinary washable garment

Only consider a consumer product expressly labeled for that adhesive and compatible with your fiber. Ordinary nail polish remover is not that product. Pretest it out of sight, and stop at any change in color, texture, or fiber.

Reducing a raised cured bead with a dull edge may be more realistic than removing the adhesive completely.

Type 4: what this guide does not cover

This guide does not provide a home method for hot melt glue, model or airplane glue, contact cement, epoxy, household or rubber cement, or vinyl and heat-transfer vinyl from printed apparel. Follow the adhesive manufacturer's instructions or use a professional cleaner.

One warning applies to all of them. Do not substitute paint thinner, lacquer thinner, fuel, or another industrial solvent. Use a product labeled for the material and stain, or call a professional, and say exactly what the adhesive was.

What your fabric allows

There is no universal adhesive solvent. These are limits on the fiber and apply to every adhesive.

Acetate is a stop case

Do not use alcohol, acetone, acetic acid, or nail polish remover on acetate. Use a professional cleaner.

On acetone

Acetone is not generally safe on fabric. It destroys acetate, and it can affect dyes and finishes on fabrics it does not destroy. It is not a recommended treatment for adhesive residue.

Separately, keep the iron and the dryer away from adhesive residue. Several common synthetic fibers are heat sensitive in their own right, and the method for tape residue uses cold rather than heat.

What not to do

  • Do not expect one solvent to cover every adhesive.
  • Do not put acetone or nail polish remover near acetate or triacetate.
  • Do not use alcohol on acetate, triacetate, modacrylic or acrylic.
  • Do not tumble dry a garment with residue still on it.
  • Do not use peanut butter, cooking oil, mayonnaise or similar kitchen tricks. That adds an oil stain to an adhesive stain.
  • Do not improvise with fuel, paint thinner, lacquer thinner, or automotive or industrial solvents.
  • Do not combine two products.
  • Do not scrub at hardened residue. Lift and scrape gently with a dull edge.
  • Do not skip the color test because the residue is small.
  • Do not soak a garment for longer than the adhesive label and the care label allow.
  • Do not wet-treat a dry-clean-only garment.

When to stop, and when to take it to a cleaner

Stop when there is no meaningful transfer to the absorbent layer and no visible improvement between passes, or at any change in the fabric's color or texture, any sign of fiber damage, or any conflict with the product label or care label.

Take it to a cleaner when the label says dry clean only, when the fiber is wool, silk, acetate or triacetate or you cannot establish it, when the garment is tailored, valuable or sentimental, when the adhesive is super glue and the garment matters, when it is a cement, industrial adhesive, hot melt glue or heat-transfer vinyl, or when your color test showed any change.

Tell the cleaner both what the adhesive was and what products you already applied. Both change what they can safely use.

Frequently asked questions

Can super glue be removed from clothes?

Often not. Once cured, super glue may be permanent on washable fabric, and solvents aggressive enough to attack it can damage the fiber or the dye. Reducing a raised bead by scraping carefully once fully cured is more realistic than removing it completely. Anything delicate, acetate-family, dry-clean-only or valuable should go to a professional cleaner.

Will rubbing alcohol damage my fabric?

It depends on the fiber. Alcohol damages acetate, triacetate, modacrylic and acrylic, and it destroys acetate outright. On other fibers, dyes and finishes still vary and alcohol can move some of them. Identify the fiber, rule it out if it is on that list, then test on an inside seam and let it dry before judging. If you cannot identify the fiber, do not use alcohol.

Does sticker residue still come out if the shirt has already been through the dryer?

Start with the same adhesive-specific method and avoid more heat until the residue is gone. For tape and label gum that means the cold route: harden the residue, scrape the excess, lay the mark face down on absorbent material, and work from the back. Keep the garment out of the dryer until you are finished, and stop if there is no meaningful transfer or if the color or texture changes.

Should I use heat or ice on sticky residue?

Ice, for tape and label gum. Cold hardens the adhesive so it fractures and scrapes off, while warming it can make it stretchy and easier to smear across a wider area. There is a second reason to keep the iron away: several common synthetic fibers are heat sensitive, and olefin should never be ironed. Water-based glue is the exception, and it needs water rather than heat.
