How to Remove Mold and Mildew Stains From Fabric

The short answer
Fix the moisture problem first. Treating an item that goes straight back into a damp closet or a wet machine achieves nothing. Then brush the loose material off outdoors, read the care label, and work out the fiber. The care label and fiber determine how the item can be washed and whether any bleach is safe. Dry the item completely and judge the result once it is dry, because damp fabric reads darker than it will. Mildew can weaken fibers. If the marked area feels thin or tender, stop treating it. Some marks lift and some do not. If the item smells musty but has no visible marks, that is an odor problem with a different fix.

These get treated as one problem and they are not.

Color alone cannot tell you what caused the marking. Black, gray, brown and greenish marks all turn up in damp textiles, and so do stains with nothing to do with growth. Treat the appearance as a reason to follow this route, not as a diagnosis.
One more check before you start. Is the item still damp, or is the place you store it still damp? Old discoloration on something that dried out long ago is a different job from an item that is still wet. Deal with the moisture first: a leak, a loaded washing machine, a basement, or a closet with no air movement.
First: take it outside and brush it off
Brush the loose surface material off outdoors before laundering. Use a soft brush and short strokes, and avoid vigorous shaking or scrubbing.
Working outside helps keep the loose material out of the room and out of the machine. Carry the item on its own rather than adding it to a full basket.
This is a practical first step, not a disinfection step.
Check the label, the fiber, and the fabric
Check all three before treating the marks.
1. The care label
Do not use a product or a procedure the label rules out. If it says dry clean only, stop and take it in.
2. The fiber
This narrows what is available to you. See the table below before choosing a bleach.
3. The condition of the fabric
Feel the marked area and compare it with a sound part of the same item. Hold it up to the light. Signs of damage rather than a mark:
- It feels thin, tender or papery where the marks are but not elsewhere.
- It snags or gives way under light pressure the rest of the item shrugs off.
- There are small holes, or the weave has opened.
- The color has gone patchy underneath the marking rather than sitting on top of it.
Mildew can weaken fibers, and no treatment reverses that. If the fabric is already tender, stop.
Test for colorfastness
Before any bleach touches the visible area, test it on an inside seam or hem allowance. Apply it the way the label directs, let it dry, and look for color change. A clean test lowers the risk. It does not prove the visible area will behave the same way, since the outside of a garment has had different wear, light and washing.
Choosing your bleach route
If detergent and a normal wash have not shifted the marks, there are two possible routes. Work out which, if either, is open to you.
Chlorine bleach
The more restricted option. Only where all three hold: the care label permits it, the item is white or the label confirms it is colorfast to chlorine bleach, and the fiber tolerates it. It is out on silk, which it weakens, and out on wool, which it damages.
Oxygen bleach
An option for some washable, colorfast items where both the care label and the product label permit it. It is not universally safe for colored or delicate fabrics, and it is not an automatic substitute wherever chlorine bleach is unavailable. Some care labels rule out all bleaches. Test it out of sight like anything else.
Dilutions and soak times
Follow the label on the product in your hand. Concentrations vary between brands and formats, so a ratio or a time copied from anywhere else, including here, is not reliable for your bottle.
The rule with no exceptions
Never mix chlorine bleach with ammonia or with acids such as vinegar. Those combinations can release hazardous gases. Do not combine bleach with other cleaners unless the product labels direct that use.
That is also why you should not run a sequence of different products at one mark. Pick the route the label and fiber allow, use it as directed, rinse, and assess.

- Do not assume a laundered item is hygienically clean. Getting a mark out is not the same as disinfecting anything.
When to stop, and when to let it go
Stop treating when another round produces no meaningful improvement, or immediately if the fabric loses color, strength, texture, or integrity. In practice, watch for no visible change between rounds, color shifting or lifting, fabric that feels weakened, or holes and opened weave.
Take it to a professional cleaner when the label says dry clean only, when it is wool, silk, or something valuable or tailored, when it is a large item like a heavy curtain or a canvas cover that you cannot wash and dry properly at home, or when you cannot identify the fiber and the item is worth the cost of finding out.
Replace it when the marks will not lift, the fabric has lost strength, and it cannot be dried properly. Replace low-value items that have lost strength. Have valuable, tailored, wool, or delicate items professionally assessed first.
If the problem is the room, not the laundry

Keeping it from coming back
All of these come down to not leaving textiles damp. Which matters most depends on your home.
- Take the wash out of the machine rather than leaving a finished load in a sealed drum.
- Dry things fully before folding or putting them away. Damp storage is what allows this to start.
- Give stored textiles air. Check packed closets against outside walls, sealed tubs, and vacuum bags.
- Hang towels flat rather than bunched on a hook, so they dry through.
- Dry camping gear, canvas and covers completely before packing, and unpack to check rather than trusting how they went away.
- Deal with the underlying damp. If a basement, bathroom or closet keeps producing this, the textiles are the symptom.
- Watch the washing machine itself. A machine that smells musty passes that on.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a mildew stain and a musty smell?
A musty smell is an odor problem in fabric that may look completely normal. A mildew stain is visible marking in the fibers, and removing a smell will not lift a mark. You can have either without the other. If you can see the marks, you are in the right place; if you can only smell it, use the mildew smell guide.
Can I use chlorine bleach on colored clothes with mildew stains?
Only where the care label says so. Chlorine bleach is generally for whites and for items the label confirms are colorfast to it; on other colors it can shift or lift the dye permanently.
